FirstService Residential Brings Sneaker Impact to South Florida Communities

In South Florida, a team known as “The Marvels” is proving that community engagement and environmental responsibility can go hand in hand. Led by Regional Director Dawn Czarnecki, Lifestyle Director Tiffany Wheeler, Community Manager Beatriz DeJesus, Community Manager Lyquiesha Weeks and Lifestyle Director Daphne Montoya, the group set out to find a fresh, practical way for residents to give back—starting with something nearly everyone has: a pair of sneakers.

Together, The Marvels are taking a meaningful step toward sustainability by partnering with Sneaker Impact—and extending the opportunity beyond our teams to the residents and communities we serve.

The initiative is simple and resident-friendly: collection boxes are placed in fitness centers, clubhouses, and other shared spaces so it’s easy to drop off gently used footwear. The goal is just as straightforward—keep shoes out of landfills while creating positive impact for both people and the planet.

Why sneakers? Footwear is one of the toughest everyday items to recycle. Built from layers of rubber, foam, fabric, and plastic, shoes can sit in landfills for decades. Sneaker Impact helps change that story by giving donated pairs a second life—redistributing wearable shoes to those who need them most and responsibly recycling the rest into materials used for products like athletic flooring and playground surfaces.

How it works:

Sneaker Impact supplies collection boxes for families and organizations to gather gently used sneakers. Each box comes with bags that hold up to six pairs of shoes, plus FedEx shipping labels. Once a bag is filled, the shoes are shipped to Sneaker Impact, where they’re sorted: wearable pairs are offered at pennies on the dollar to local merchants in developing countries, who revive and resell them in their communities—creating access to affordable footwear and supporting local micro-entrepreneurs. Shoes are something most of us take for granted, but in developing countries residents rely on sneakers for transportation and opportunity. They can mean the difference between being able to work or attend school, or not.

To date, Sneaker Impact has recycled almost 16M pairs of shoes through 3,000+ collection locations. More than 5,000 micro entrepreneurs have been empowered, and 128,660,155+ CO2e kg has been reduced from landfills.

By bringing this effort directly into managed communities, FirstService Residential is making sustainability more accessible—and more community-driven. Residents can clear out closets, drop off gently used or worn sneakers, and feel confident their donation is helping reduce waste, conserve resources, and expand social good beyond their neighborhood.

“The Sneaker Impact initiative has been such a powerful example of what happens when people come together for a common purpose,” said Dawn Czarnecki.” The Marvels have embraced the opportunity to not only support those in need but to contribute a more sustainable future. Seeing our teams and Communities rally behind this cause has been incredibly rewarding and reenforces our belief that service is at the heart of everything we do!”

Tiffany shared how small actions from a community can create real change, and found the experience of seeing residents rally around a cause that supports sustainability and helps people around the world to be incredibly rewarding. “For me, this initiative represents the heart of Four Seasons. Through Sneaker Impact, our community is literally helping provide the first step toward a new path for someone else, while reducing their own environment footprint.”

Last year alone, the team collected more than 600 pairs of shoes. The initiative reflects FirstService Residential’s commitment to thoughtful stewardship — supporting environmental responsibility while strengthening resident connection. When small actions are made easy (and shared), they can add up to meaningful change.

Sneaker Impact is available throughout the United States, and collection boxes are provided free of charge to anyone interested in setting one out. Each box includes a FedEx return label, making it easy and hassle-free to send donated shoes back once they’re collected. To learn more, please visit: sneakerimpact.com
