Living more sustainably doesn’t have to mean making major lifestyle changes. Small, thoughtful choices can add up—and this month, we’re challenging you to focus on one simple goal: waste less.
There are plenty of ways to get started, and you don’t have to do them all. Start by picking one that works for you and see if you can make it a habit.
Start in the Kitchen
A little planning can keep food out of the trash—and may save you money along the way. Before grocery shopping, take a quick look at what you already have, plan a few meals and make a list. Freeze leftovers you won’t eat right away and try using older ingredients before opening something new.
Skip a Few Single-Use Items
Keep a reusable water bottle, shopping bag, coffee mug or food container somewhere convenient. Having them in your car, backpack or work bag makes it much easier to skip disposable alternatives when you’re on the go.
Use a Little Less Energy
Look for small opportunities to conserve energy at home. Turn off lights when you leave a room, unplug electronics you aren’t using, run full loads of laundry and dishes, or adjust your thermostat by a degree or two. Once they become routine, you may barely notice you’re doing them.
Rethink One Car Trip
Could one short trip this month be made without your car? Walk or bike if practical, carpool with someone, use public transportation, or simply combine several errands into one trip. You don’t have to give up driving—just look for an occasional opportunity to drive a little less.
Leave a Place Better Than You Found It
Pick up a few pieces of litter while walking your dog. Recycle something that might otherwise end up in the trash. Plant flowers that support local pollinators. Or invite friends, family or coworkers to join a community cleanup.
Your One Thing Challenge
Choose one way to waste less and stick with it for the rest of the month.
That’s it.
