50 Issues of Purpose in Action

This month, we’re celebrating a milestone—our 50th issue of Spotlight—and, more importantly, the people and stories that made it possible.

For 50 issues, Spotlight has given us a window into something pretty special: the many ways FirstService team members care for one another and the communities around them.

That spirit of service is more than something we celebrate in a newsletter. It’s an important part of our culture at FirstService. Across our companies, #FirstServeOthers reflects a shared belief that we have an opportunity—and a responsibility—to make a positive difference for our people and the communities where we live and work.

Spotlight brings that part of our culture to life through the people who live it every day.

We’ve shared stories of colleagues giving their time to causes close to their hearts. Teams have collected food, school supplies, clothing and holiday gifts; walked and raised funds for causes that have touched their lives; mentored young people; supported families in need; cared for animals; protected the environment; and stepped up when communities faced disasters.

We’ve also seen our own people rally around one another through the FirstService Relief Fund, an enduring part of Spotlight and a powerful reminder that #FirstServeOthers begins with taking care of each other.

A Story That’s Grown With Us

Spotlight has changed quite a bit since its earliest issues.

What began as a way to share Social Purpose news has grown into a place to celebrate our people, introduce causes that matter to them and, perhaps most importantly, inspire others to get involved.

Along the way, new traditions have taken shape. Summer of Service has brought teams across FirstService together around a shared season of giving back. People of Purpose has allowed us to get to know the individuals behind some extraordinary acts of service. And features that offer practical ways to help have reminded us that making a difference doesn’t always require a huge commitment. Sometimes it starts with one small action.

The causes and activities may be different, but together they tell a much bigger story about who we are as an organization. Whether someone is helping a colleague through a difficult time, volunteering with a local nonprofit or simply seeing a need and deciding to act, these stories reflect a culture of people who care—and who put that care into action.

Here’s to the Next 50

Reaching our 50th issue gives us a wonderful opportunity to look back with appreciation and gratitude for the many ways our teams have brought our #FirstServeOthers mission to life. Even more exciting is the opportunity to look ahead—to the people, ideas and stories that will shape what comes next.

There are people we haven’t met yet. Causes we haven’t discovered. Ideas that haven’t been tried. Communities where our teams will find new ways to help. And small acts of kindness happening right now that may become the stories we share tomorrow.

That’s the beauty of Social Purpose at FirstService. It isn’t separate from our culture—it’s part of how we show up for one another and the communities we serve. And there isn’t just one way to do it. Across our companies, people bring their own experiences, passions and ideas to #FirstServeOthers, while Spotlight gives us a place to bring those stories together.

So, as we celebrate 50 issues, thank you to everyone who has volunteered, donated, organized an event, supported a colleague, nominated someone, shared a photo, told us a story or been inspired to try something new.  Every issue is possible because someone decided to act—and then took the time to share that experience so it might inspire someone else.

You have filled these pages with purpose—and, together, you’re helping shape the culture they represent.

Here’s to the next 50—and all the stories still waiting to be told.
