Walk & Roll: Coming Together for the Spina Bifida Community

On October 17, the Kansas City community came together for the 13th Annual Walk & Roll for Spina Bifida in North Kansas City, Missouri, raising awareness and supporting individuals and families affected by spina bifida.

The event had a special connection to the FirstService family. Douglas Mackesty’s daughter, who has spina bifida, led a team in this year’s event. FirstService was proud to support the effort through a financial contribution, raising awareness and encouraging participation.

What Is Spina Bifida?

Spina bifida is a birth defect that occurs when the spine and spinal cord do not form properly during early pregnancy. Its effects can vary widely from person to person and may include challenges with mobility, bladder and bowel function, and other health complications. While there is no cure, advances in treatment and care help many people with spina bifida lead active and fulfilling lives.

More Than a Walk

The annual Walk & Roll brought together individuals, families, friends and supporters for a day of community, connection and celebration. The event featured a one-mile walk or roll, breakfast, music, vendors, prizes, a raffle and family-friendly entertainment.

Beyond raising awareness, the event helped support local individuals and families living with spina bifida while fostering a sense of belonging and community.

For the Mackesty family and others whose lives have been touched by spina bifida, events like Walk & Roll are a meaningful reminder of the power of community. FirstService was pleased to play a part in supporting this important cause and helping shine a light on the individuals and families it serves.
