FirstService Relief Fund: Supporting Employees Impacted by the US Government Shutdown

In response to the ongoing US government shutdown and the resulting reduction or elimination of SNAP (food assistance) benefits, we are taking proactive steps to support employees and their families facing financial hardship.

Expanded FirstService Relief Fund Support

  • Temporary Hardship Event Added: The FirstService Relief Fund now includes a special event category, “Financial Hardship Caused by U.S. Government Shutdown,” to help colleagues directly affected by job loss, furlough, or reduction in SNAP benefits.
  • This support extends to eligible employees if they (or their spouse/domestic partner or eligible dependents) have experienced job loss, furlough, or reduction in SNAP benefits.
  • Eligible Expenses: Grants may be awarded to cover food and utility expenses, as well as situations where a spouse or domestic partner has been unable to work or lost SNAP benefits. To qualify, applicants must demonstrate a minimum financial impact of $500, in line with fund criteria.
  • Documentation Required: Applicants should provide proof of SNAP eligibility, WIC eligibility, notice of furlough or office closure, or a letter from an employer confirming layoff or work without pay.
  • Confidential Application Process: As always, the application process is confidential, and all administrative costs are covered by the company, ensuring that 100% of donations go directly to those in need.

How the Program Works

  • Grant Amounts: Eligible employees may receive grants to help cover essential expenses, such as food and utilities, up to the $3,000 maximum allowed by the fund.
  • Duration: The special event category will remain available until the government reopens and/or SNAP benefits are reinstated. All applications submitted while the event is active will be processed, even after the category is removed.
  • Inclusivity: Assistance is available to eligible employees and those with household members (spouse, domestic partner, or eligible dependents) who have been impacted by the shutdown through job loss, loss of SNAP benefits, etc.
