Rotary has long been recognized around the world for its commitment to service above self, bringing together community leaders who are dedicated to making a positive impact locally and globally. While Rotary’s service projects, humanitarian efforts, and community partnerships are well known, one of its most important investments is in the development of young people.
Through innovative youth programs, Rotary is helping shape the next generation of leaders, global citizens, and changemakers.
Brian Sherman, sr. director business intelligence at FirstService, serves as the Youth Services Chair for Arizona and has seen first-hand the life-long benefits those who participate in Rotary programs achieve. “My daughter has been actively involved in Rotary, through her school’s Interact Club and as part of Rotary Youth Exchange. The boost in her confidence and leadership has been amazing to watch. Soon she will be going to Mexico to serve as an adult advisor.”
Rotary Youth Exchange
The Rotary Youth Exchange program offers students the opportunity to live and study abroad while experiencing new cultures, languages, and traditions. More than just an educational experience, Youth Exchange fosters international goodwill, cultural understanding, and lifelong friendships.
Students return home with greater confidence, independence, and leadership skills. They become ambassadors of peace and understanding, carrying Rotary’s values into their schools, communities, and future careers.
Interact Clubs
Interact Clubs, sponsored by local Rotary clubs, empower young people from 12 to 18 to develop leadership skills while serving their communities. “Interactors” identify local needs, organize service projects, and learn the importance of teamwork and civic engagement.
From food drives and environmental initiatives to community outreach programs, Interact members discover that even small acts of service can create meaningful change. Many Interactors continue their service journey through Rotary programs and eventually become Rotarians themselves.
“One of the most special things I’ve seen through my work with our Interact Club members is how shy kids are transformed into confident leaders. Members work together on a variety of projects and get to learn and polish skills that will serve them well throughout their lives,” said Brian.
Rotary Ambassadors: Inspiring Leadership and Service
Rotary Ambassador programs provide young leaders with opportunities to represent Rotary, engage with community organizations, and promote service initiatives. These ambassadors serve as role models for their peers while developing communication, leadership, and professional skills.
By connecting youth with community leaders and service opportunities, Rotary Ambassadors gain valuable experience that prepares them to lead in their schools, careers, and communities. Their enthusiasm and fresh perspectives strengthen Rotary’s mission and ensure that the spirit of service continues for generations to come.
Creating a Legacy of Service
Rotary’s commitment to youth development reflects its vision for a better future. Through Youth Exchange, Interact Clubs, and Ambassador programs, Rotary is cultivating compassionate leaders who understand the value of service, cultural understanding, and community involvement.
By empowering youth today, we are building stronger communities, fostering international friendship, and creating a lasting legacy of service for tomorrow.
“Developing young leaders is the best long-term investment we can make. If you can guide even one kid into someone with a heart for service at age 18, imagine how much good they can do in their lives,” said Brian.
Together, Rotary is not only changing lives—it is inspiring the next generation to lead with purpose, compassion, and a deep commitment to making the world a better place.w
