Team New York Helps Prepare Homes for Families in Need

As part of our Summer of Service initiative, 20 FirstService Residential New York associates spent a meaningful morning in late July volunteering with Services for the Underserved (S:US), helping prepare newly renovated permanent housing for families transitioning out of the New York City shelter system.

S:US recently transformed four interconnected buildings that were once in severe disrepair into safe, welcoming homes. After completely gutting and renovating the properties, the organization is now preparing to welcome 70 families (110 individuals) as they begin the next chapter of their lives.

During the three-hour volunteer event, our team worked together in the buildings’ shared basement to unpack, assemble, and organize hundreds of essential household items that each family will receive upon move-in. From cleaning supplies, bedding, towels, toiletries, and trash cans to small kitchen appliances, cookware, and personal wheeled shopping carts, every item was carefully prepared to help make each apartment feel like home.

By the end of the morning, the team had successfully unpacked and organized every single item, ensuring everything was ready for the new residents. Families have already begun completing the necessary paperwork and are expected to start moving into their new homes before the end of August.

FirstService Residential New York has also been invited back to celebrate this important milestone at the official ribbon-cutting ceremony in October.

A special thank you goes to the New York Associate Engagement Committee for organizing this rewarding volunteer opportunity.
