We’re so grateful for everyone’s participation and generosity. Now, let’s meet our top three finishers!

Celebrating a Special Bond and a Passion for Giving Back

When they met at a Petco adoption event in California, Keren Calder and a kitty who was to become her furry companion, Nelson, instantly connected, beginning a journey of love and loyalty. From the moment they met, it was clear they were meant to be.

A Pet Like No Other

Nelson is more than just Keren’s companion—he’s a constant source of love and trust. His loyalty is unmatched, often staying by her side like a shadow. His talkative nature and love for cuddling make him the perfect company, bringing joy and comfort every day.

Supporting KC Pet Project

Inspired by their tireless efforts to help animals, Keren supports KC Pet Project, a nonprofit dedicated to rescuing and caring for animals in need in Kansas City, Missouri. Keren follows the organization on TikTok, and admires their incredible efforts even in the face of the overwhelming number of animals they care for.

A Dedicated Team Member

With five and a half years at FirstService, Keren serves as an onsite manager for a high-rise condo building in Kansas City, Missouri. What she appreciates most about her role is the supportive environment fostered by her leadership and team. It’s a place where training, encouragement, and camaraderie thrive, creating a fulfilling workplace.

Keren and Nelson’s story is a testament to the incredible bond between humans and animals and the importance of supporting causes that make a difference.

Honoring Freeway: A 17-Year Journey of Love and Loyalty

Freeway

In September 2007, a stray puppy running down the middle of Highway 580 in Richmond, California, was rescued by a kind-hearted individual. That puppy was introduced to Suzy Johnson who initially hesitated to adopt him due to frequent travel and the responsibilities of pet ownership. But the moment they met, it was love at first sight, and soon “Freeway” became Suzy’s “soul dog,” beginning a remarkable 17-year journey filled with unconditional love, loyalty, and connection.

Freeway was known for his beautiful spirit and the special bond he shared with his best human friend. His expressive gaze was particularly memorable—it was a look that radiated pure love. In their years together, Freeway taught invaluable lessons about loyalty and devotion, leaving an indelible mark on those who knew him. Though he is deeply missed, his memory continues to inspire.

A Commitment to Senior Dogs

Freeway’s story has inspired Suzy’s support for Muttville (https://muttville.org/), a senior dog rescue organization dedicated to giving older dogs a second chance. Many senior dogs end up in shelters due to medical needs, higher care demands, or the loss of their owners. Muttville provides these dogs with a safe, loving environment to live out their golden years, ensuring they feel cared for and cherished in the final chapter of their lives.

A Passionate California Closets Team Member

For nearly six years, Suzy has been part of the California Closets family. She describes the company as a place where people genuinely care, fostering a culture of support and appreciation. It feels like home—a sentiment echoed in initiatives like this contest, which highlights the organization’s commitment to its people and their passions.
Freeway’s legacy lives on through this shared love for animals and the belief in creating a compassionate, caring world for all.

Meet Lucy: A Golden Bond and a Commitment to Community

Lucy

In February 2024, a lucky golden retriever found her forever home with Catherine Orn in a small town outside Green Bay, Wisconsin. Now proudly supporting the Vikings, she has quickly become a beloved family member.

A Special Connection

This affectionate golden retriever has a heartwarming habit of wanting to sit and hold hands—or in her case, paws. Her loving and gentle nature has made her an irreplaceable companion to Catherine, bringing endless joy to her home.

Supporting Golden Retrievers in Need

Catherine is passionate about giving back by supporting Retrieve a Golden of the Midwest (https://ragom.org/), an organization dedicated to rescuing and rehoming golden retrievers. The charity helps goldens in need find loving forever homes, ensuring these wonderful family pets can bring happiness to more families.

A Dedicated Career at California Closets

With nearly 20 years at California Closets, Catherine appreciates the organization’s prioritization of career growth, development, and ethical business practices. She takes pride in being part of an organization that values both its employees and the communities it serves.

These stories highlight the joy and unconditional love pets bring into our lives and the importance of supporting organizations that help others find that same connection. Even if adopting a pet isn’t an option for you, there are plenty of ways to support your local rescues—volunteering, fostering, attending events, or simply sharing their social media posts to spread the word.
